Relocating to Oxford after 15 years in Japan and Hong Kong, the owners of this Victorian house put together a team of experts to create a mostly open-plan layout full of intriguing design details. The kitchen is part of the open-plan living space that looks out onto the garden. Punctuation points in the shape of strategically placed pillars and curtains separate spaces in the open-plan ground floor. Steps lead down into the kitchen and sitting room, and a ceiling thrown high adds volume, daylight and a sense of space without the cavernous echo of an oversize room.

"The flooring in this kitchen consists of simple wide pine boards that are specialist painted," explains Beata Heuman, the interior designer behind this vibrant home in London. "It's an open plan kitchen in a large space and we wanted something original to tie it all together. The fact that it's painted wood rather than tiles adds softness while avoiding the monotone finish you otherwise get with wood. The back wall is at an angle and the pattern drew attention away from the space being an irregular shape and helped balance it out." The colour palette, which includes a Swedish green marble worktop and a bespoke copper cooker hood and island by Premier Building & Design, complements the garden beyond. It will acquire a greenish patina over time.

Off-white flagstones add a touch of warmth to this white kitchen. The tiles also add to the modern feel of the space.

The design of this white modern kitchen with pendant lights is entirely bespoke, and much of it is concealed behind a wall of built-in storage. 'Storage was the biggest challenge in this flat. Now every little void has built-in cupboards', says designer Harriet Anstruther. Bodil Blain and her husband lived in their Bayswater flat for a year without doing anything. 'It's the best advice I can give,' she says. 'After that you really know what's needed and what isn't.' Bodil later designed the kitchen herself, working with her friend, the designer Fiona Parke, and going through 25 drawings or more. She praises her cabinetmaker, Neil Straker of Cheverell, as 'the most patient man on the planet'. The look, with white units, marble worktop and crisp colours reflects Bodil's time in New York, and indeed the handles come from the US, as she could not find what she wanted here. She opted for encaustic floor tiles in shades of aubergine, blue and white. For similar, try Evora tiles from Fired Earth. Each tile measures 20cm square and costs £8.99.

This kitchen in designer Mark Smith's London flat is a House & Garden favourite. We have fallen for the chevron flooring. The kitchen worktop, running right around the bay window, makes sure that not a centimetre of space is wasted. The bold flooring pattern is offest by the paler colour, making it the perfect balance in this small but punchy kitchen.

In the kitchen of this London flat, owned by a property developer and decorated by Max Rollitt, the Shaker-plain cabinetry is in a rich red reminiscent of a Victorian railway carriage or a dashing Regency barouche. It sits proudly on top of monchrome checked tiles. The standard lamp is from Marianna Kennedy, while the pendant lights are from Holloways of Ludlow. The effect is simple yet bold.

The classic combination of red and blue works well here, creating a fun space that doesn't compromise on style. The clean lines of the tile pattern allow colour to be the main focus of the room.

    Reclaimed Wooden Floor

The kitchen in the Parisian flat of Vincent Frey and his wife Bianca is by Valcucine and made entirely of recyclable material. Vincent is the grandson of the eponymous Pierre Frey founder (and the current deputy manager of the French fabric and furnishing company). The couple hired architect Marika Dru, an old school friend of Vincent's, to work on their home, although decorated it themselves. The reclaimed wooden floor is not only eco-friendly but also adds rustic interest to the otherwise sleek space.

The compact galley kitchen in designer Ben Pentreath's small flat[/link] is bright with white units and shelving, though not clinical thanks to unusual dark green walls. A similar paint is 'Euphorbia' by Paint Library.

Want to have dark walls in a small room? Create balace by having a light coloured floor that will reflect light - painted floorboards offer easy opportunity for this.

  • Jake Curtis

'You come straight in to this part of the house from the street, so I knew that whatever I put on the floor would have to work hard. I chose a combination of reclaimed wooden boards, and Emery & Cie tiles in tonal greens. There are random ones dotted about the room with letters printed on them representing the children's names. The combination of the wood and tiles distinguishes the kitchen from the living areas.'
