Flu season has finally hit us down in Southern California, and where others are usually downing bottles of Nyquil and sucking on cough drops, I'm ordering more bottles of essential oils. Ever since I discovered the healing properties of essential oils, I rarely ever get sick – in fact, I haven't gotten sick since December 2016, which is over one year ago from today!
At first my boyfriend Jun thought I was "practicing voodoo" when he first saw me mixing oils, diffusing them and even taking them orally, but ever since he's started using them as well he hasn't gotten sick in almost 8 months! That is amiracle considering when I first met him years ago he was sick almost once every month – talk about being a carrier of influenza.
What most people don't know is that essential oils have a wide array of amazing health benefits that are perfect to prevent colds and fight them off quickly. The best part: these are all-natural remedies sourced from nature itself – meaning that the label of every bottle contains no ingredients you can't pronounce, which honestly makes me feel more at ease about what I'm putting on (and into) my body.
So what kind of oils do you use for colds and flus? Only high-quality essential oils can give you maximum benefits when it comes to fighting off germs and viruses. My favorite essential oil brand Edens Garden features an incredibly large library of high-quality, therapeutic grade oils at extremely affordable price points – most oils are anywhere between $3.95 – $10.95 for 5 – 10 ml! And because they are therapeutic grade, you also have the option of safely applying them not just topically but internally as well – however, be sure to check the FAQ regarding safety.
I've partnered with Edens Garden to share with you my favorite oils for combatting cough, colds, and flu. From simple antibacterial oils to powerful blends that ward off colds for months on end, continue reading to learn more about the very oils I used that got me through the past year, flu-free.

Essential Oils for Cold and Flu
Guardian
Best For: Expectorant, Cold, Flu, Diffusing
Smells Like: Citrus, Spicy
When Guardian was released I was euphoric because I was in love with DoTerra's On Guard blend prior to discovering Edens Garden. Guardian is a powerful antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial blend of Orange, Clove Bud, Cinnamon Bark, Cinnamon Leaf, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary essential oils.
Because Eden's Garden oils are therapeutic grade, I like to take one drop of Guardian under the tongue during flu season for preventative care, especially when attending social events. If I'm being honest, taking Guardian under the tongue is probably one of the biggest reasons why I haven't gotten sick all year.
Side note: while Eden's Garden oils are therapeutic grade, their products are labeled "for external use only" for liability purposes. However, I personally take them internally with no issues. You can read more about this in the Eden's Garden FAQ.

Fighting Five
Best For: Expectorant, Cold, Flu, Disinfectant
Smells Like: Medicinal, Spicy
Fighting Five, similar to Guardian, is another powerful antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial blend. If anything, I'd say it's probably even stronger considering it contains Lemon in place of Orange, which has more antiviral properties. and Fighting Five also seems to have more Rosemary than Guardian does, which contains camphor, a stimulant, antispasmodic, antiseptic, decongestant, anesthetic, sedative, and nervous pacifier.
Prior to Guardian I used to take Fighting Five orally to prevent flus, but now I mix it with a carrier oil and use it as a hand sanitizer since it's stronger than Guardian.
Immunity
Best For: Expectorant, Cold, Flu, Disinfectant
Smells Like: Slight Citrus, Medicinal
Immunity is a gorgeous woodsy and slightly sweet-smelling antimicrobial blend that's perfect for a stuffy nose and cold. I actually recommend using this like Vicks Vapor rub and diluting with a carrier oil to rub on your chest and even nose to help breathing at night if you've got a stuffy nose from a cold. Its scent is perfect to diffuse without smelling too medicinal.
Digest Ease
Best For: Stomach Flu, Indigestion, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Gas
Smells Like: Woodsy, Clean
Because I have a sensitive stomach, I tend to get stomach aches very easily. Indigestion, acid reflux, and even diarrhea – you name it, I probably get it every few months. Digest Ease works for me like Pepto Bismol! I simply dilute this synergy blend with a carrier oil and gently massage my stomach in a clockwise motion that follows along the digestive tract. This definitely helps settle any stomach troubles.
Germ-Fighting Essential Oils
Tea Tree
Best For: Disinfecting, Cuts and Wounds, Skincare, Acne
Smells Like: Antiseptic, Slightly Mentholated
Tea Tree is a basic essential oil that should always be in your medicine cabinet. It's a natural disinfectant that contains antiseptic and antifungal properties, which makes it ideal for cuts, acne, fungal infections and more. You can mix it with apple cider vinegar and distilled water as a dandruff scalp spray or mix it with a carrier oil and rub on your feet for ingrown toenails and athlete's foot.

Lemon
Best For: Cleaning, Skincare, Oily Skin, Acne Scars
Smells Like: Citrus
There's a reason why a lot of cleaning products contain lemon in it – back in the olden day, lemons were used to disinfect, clean, and cut through greasy surfaces. You can add 20 drops of Lemon oil to a solution of vinegar and water into a spray bottle and safely disinfect household surfaces. Lemon contains d-limonene, a powerful antioxidant that fights cancer-causing cells.
You can drop some lemon oil into hot water and honey to soothe a sore throat.
Disinfecting properties aside, Lemon is a great budget-friendly essential oil that can be used for skincare. Because the citrus properties are effective at cutting through oil, this is a great oil that can help mattify oily skin and can also be used to lighten acne scars with repeated use.
Cleaning
Best For: Cleaning, Diffusing
Smells Like: Calming, Lavender
If you don't like the scent of Lemon, Cleaning blend may be just as effective for cleaning purposes as Lemon oil. This blend of Lavender, Lemongrass, Rosemary and Tea Tree is a calming aroma that has antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and antiseptic qualities. Just like with Lemon, you can mix Cleaning oil with distilled water and vinegar or even alcohol for a natural disinfectant.
You can also wear Cleaning as a natural perfume that doubles as a topical application to prevent colds.
Essential Oils for Asthma and Respiratory Problems
Breathe Easier
Best For: Stuffy Nose, Congestion
Smells Like: Minty, Slightly Mentholated
Breathe Easier is a blend of Lemon, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary that's great to decongest stuffy noses without smelling too much like menthol. Thanks to the peppermint, Breathe Easier also provides a cooling sensation that can help relieve symptoms of fever.

Respiratory Ease
Best For: Asthma
Smells Like: Slightly Sweet and Spicy, Almost Juicy
Respiratory Ease may sound similar to the purpose of Breathe Easier, but RE is most suitable for people with asthma. This blend smells less like Vicks and more herbaceous due to the Cardamom, Hyssop and Juniper Berry. Jun frequently gets asthma attacks, but since he's been using this on his chest every night he's no longer had to use his inhaler.
I also highly recommend this blend to avid fans of Young Living's RC Blend – it smells pretty much the same and is much more affordable at only $11.95 for a 10ml bottle.
Eucalyptus
Best For: Stuffy Nose, Congestion, Achy Joints and Muscles
Smells Like: Menthol
Eucalyptus is a multipurpose oil I also feel that everyone should have. When sick, eucalyptus can help loosen mucus and reduce congestion when inhaled, thus reducing symptoms of influenza. You can also mix eucalyptus with a carrier oil and massage it into achy muscles caused by the flu or working out.
What Carrier Oil to Mix With
You can actually use any Eden's Garden carrier oils to dilute these oils, but I decided to try out Hemp Seed oil since it is rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, B3, B6, C, D and E. Not only is hemp seed oil chock-full of vitamins but it also contains anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may potentially help with beating a cold. Better yet: all those vitamins and antioxidants are perfect for skincare as well, while the anti-inflammatory properties are perfect for sore muscles and joints.
If Hemp Seed smells too earthy for you, you can try out these other carrier oils that are rich in antioxidants and vitamins:
- Avocado Oil (Absorbs easily, great for dry skin)
- Grapeseed Oil (Highly absorbent, thinner consistency)
- Fractionated Coconut Oil (Odorless)
- Jojoba Oil (Suitable for sensitive skin)
Ps.: I'm also loving the new carrier oil bottles! The previous carrier oil bottles had wide openings that would sometimes result in spills if you tipped the bottle too much, but the new ones come with a pump, making it easy to dispense the right amount of oil without a mess. And an extra bonus: the older bottles were 3.4 fl oz while the new ones are 4 fl oz, so you can get a little bit more for your money.
