What you demand for making your own solar filter: Baader AstroSolar® Prophylactic Film 5.0 or Baader AstroSolar® Photograph Motion picture 3.8 (do non use Photo Film for visual observation!), two sheets of white strong cardboard, pair of scissors, compass, some pieces of "Kleenex"-tissue, double-faced adhesive record, paper glue

  1. Using the compass, draw two circles on pieces of strong cardboard. The inner diameter should match the full aperture of the objective lens, the outer diameter should exist 10cm (~iv″) larger. Cut the two disks from the paper-thin.
  2. In order to minimize the volume of air between the filter and objective lens, it is advisable to mountain the set up fabricated filter directly onto the tube of the telescope / binocular, rather than onto an boosted dew cap. If the dew cap cannot be removed from your telescope, its outer diameter will provide the minimum size of the outer ring of your cardboard disk.

  1. Encompass ane full face of each paper-thin-ring with gluey record. Cleanly cut away whatsoever inner and outer excess tape, so that only the two cardboard faces of both rings are covered with the glutinous tape.
  2. Stretch out a square piece of "Kleenex" or similar facial tissue flat on a difficult, aeroplane surface (a table) and secure the four corners of the tissue with clear adhesive tape. The tissue must be free of any wrinkles.
  3. Cutting a foursquare piece of AstroSolar® Pic a little larger than the outer bore of the strong paper-thin rings.
The Pic must be mounted into the filter cell without any of the protective layers of plastic or paper. Nevertheless, for cut AstroSolar® Film, always proceed information technology protected between the included two sheets of protective layers (white silk paper and/or transparent or white plastic). This "sandwich" is easily cut without creasing the motion picture or getting fingerprints on it. The latest version of AstroSolar® Film comes with protective layers already on both sides.

  1. Gently place the cutout of AstroSolar® Film 5.0 onto the flat tissue and secure the four corners with tape – but practise non stretch it! At this time carefully remove the protective layer facing upwards. AstroSolar® Film must not exist put under tension in guild to retain its precision optical property.
  2. Hold ane cardboard ring, with the viscous side facing down, 10 millimeters above the film and allow it fall down onto the AstroSolar® Film, so that the ring touches the film all around at the same time.

  1. Turn over the cardboard ring with the film-covered side facing upwardly and lay information technology back down onto the Kleenex. Now remove the 2d protective layer, and then stick the second paper-thin ring against the AstroSolar® Film with the other ring already fastened to the bottom side. You lot have created a round film-holder with AstroSolar® Picture cleanly and securely fastened, without creases and wrinkles – but, almost of all: without stressing the moving picture!
  2. Now put a 50mm (ii″) broad stripe of potent paper-thin around the objective lens or telescope dew cap and record the ends with double-faced agglutinative tape. Echo this procedure 3 times betwixt each layer to produce a potent 50mm long cardboard cylinder that precisely fits onto your optical instrument.
  3. Finally, securely glue the holder containing theAstroSolar® Film onto the 50mm cylinder while the cylinder is still mounted at the forepart stop of your telescope.
